Human Storm Protection

Have you ever thought of what to do when a big storm is coming? Levees can help you a lot in floods. Levees come from the French word “raised,” but it was in America, not France. Landowners built their own levees to protect their property, but it left gaps, and not all of the levees were well-maintained. Levees protect against flooding, but they can also contribute to their own erosion, failure, and increase the risk of flooding downstream. So, to help you in a flood, levees will come in handy.
Have you ever wondered what could help you during a hurricane? Hurricane barriers are another protection against hurricanes. These are three thousand feet long tidal barriers that span the Providence River in Rhode Island. This hurricane barrier was made between 1960 and 1966 to protect the low-dying downtown area of the city from damaging storm surge and floods associated with hurricanes and other major storm events. It consist of five main parts; river gates, rock and earthen dis-likes along each shore, vehicular gates along each shore where rods pass through, canal gates, and a pumping station to control the flow of water.
River gates are the main feature of a hurricane barrier. It’s a group of three large gates which span the river. Each gate is forty feet wide and weighs fifty three tons.
Dikes are the majority of a hurricane barrier. They’re twenty five feet high rocks and earthen dikes along the low-lying areas of a water front.
A vehicular gate is a set of three huge steel. They’re located under the newly constructed portion of Interstate 195.
The canal gates control water used to cool the nearby Manchester Street Power Station.
And lastly, the pumping station contains four thousand five hundred H.P. pumps with instantaneous starting power and is designed to convoy water from the Providence River. Each pump is fifty seven point seven feet high and twenty feet in diameter and each pump can pump up to three point million gallons per minute. This barrier is also used to keep the river level higher during low tides. So basically, hurricane barriers can protect you easily from a very large storm.
Do you know a good way to avoid a flood in your house? Stilts. Stilts are about one foot around the perimeter. They’re about three to four feet high and they basically can protect your house from a big flood or storm. These stilts are usually made out of cement because if they were plastic, your house wouldn’t be there. Most people that have stilts holding up their house, decorate them so they don’t make their house look tacky. When you have stilts holding your house, you are one step closer to having a clean break-through, though the storm or big flood.
